SPOKANE — A new champion in the Class 1B/2B state boys soccer ranks will be crowned next weekend at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner.
Waitsburg-Prescott saw to that here Saturday afternoon after posting a 1-0 victory over defending champion Northwest Christian at Whitworth University.
W-P, which improved to 16-5 on the year, will play at 8 p.m. on Friday in the state semifinals against Grace Academy — which blanked Providence Classical Christian, 2-0, on Saturday.
The only goal of Saturday’s match came from W-P’s Ivan Figueroa, assisted by Ernesto Valvoninos, at the 11-minute mark of the 80-minute match.
Goalie Christian Paro notched five saves between the pipes for W-P.
W-P had 19 shots on goal compared with just four for Northwest Christian.
“Our defense did an outstanding job,” W-P assistant coach Jay Potts said. “Ernesto played really well. He had eight shots on goal.
“We’re going back to the final four for the second time in three years,” Potts said. “We’re pretty excited about it.”
