DAYTON — The Waitsburg-Prescott team connected on three goals in the first 10 minutes, and the visitors shut out Dayton, 8-0, here Wednesday.
Ivan Figueroa started the scoring going early, as he took a pass from Luis Garcia and scored in the second minute.
Johnny Escalante extended the W-P lead with a goal in the fourth minute.
Figueroa added another score in the 10th minute on an assist by Trey Potts.
W-P assistant coach Jay Potts said Figueroa is improving his positioning, which makes it easier for Figuero to receive passes.
“We got up early,” Potts said. “We did a very good job of possessing the ball and keeping possession. Our passing game is improving.”
After Garcia and Rodrigo Gonzalez added a goal apiece, W-P finished the first half up 5-0.
After the break, Waitsburg-Prescott extended its lead, as Christian Caro connected on his first score of the season.
Caro, normally a goalkeeper, got some run in the field in the second half, Potts said.
“His goal came unassisted from about 40 yards out,” Potts said. “That was good to see. We need those long shots. That was a highlight for him.”
Now, W-P focuses on its away game with Boardman, Ore., on Friday. Boardman defeated W-P, 6-2, earlier this season.
Potts said he anticipates this game going differently, as W-P will feature different defensive personnel this time around, he said.
“Our defense has been getting better and we need to see a little more improvement, especially for Friday’s game,” Potts said. “Overall, we’re pretty pleased with our defense. Our backs — nothing gets past them.”
