Larry F. Hetterley, Milton-Freewater, passed away Oct. 1, 2013, at his home at the age of 66 years.
Memorial services will be Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at 11 a.m., at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home in Milton-Freewater. Memorial contributions may be made to Meadowood Springs Speech Camp or the Disabled American Veterans through the funeral home. There will be a potluck dinner at the Elks Lodge, 613 N. Main, Milton-Freewater, immediately following the memorial service.
Larry was born Aug. 2, 1947, in McLaughlin, S.D., the son of Jake F. and Martha Wolff Hetterley. He attended elementary schools in South Dakota, then moved to Portland, where he continued his schooling. The family then moved to Milton-Freewater, where he attended Mac-Hi. He met the love of his life, Gloria Free, in Milton-Freewater and the couple were married on June 5, 1965. Their lives were blessed with two sons, Kevin Hetterley and Mike Hetterley, both of Milton-Freewater.
Larry was a community leader and a mentor to his sons and grandchildren. He tirelessly donated his efforts to many community organizations, including the Elks-sponsored Meadowood Springs Speech and Hearing Camp. He was passionate about recognizing veterans for their service to our country and was an advocate for the disabled vet. A partial list of awards and activities include, Outstanding 4-H Parent 1980-1981, Milton-Freewater BPOE honored him twice as Elk of the Year, Committeeman of the Year 1996-1997, State Elk of the Year 1997-1998, Outstanding Service Commendation March 2003, VFW appreciation 2005, Kiwanis Everyday Hero 2006, Veteran Volunteer Award 2008-2009, Junior Show Honor Roll 2009, and Disabled American Veterans Bronze Leader Appreciation 2010.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria Hetterley; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Betsy Hetterley and Mike and Julie Hetterley all of Milton-Freewater; his brothers and their spouses, Bob and Marykay Hetterley, Duane and Linda Hetterley, and Roland and Teri Hetterley; 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
