WALLA WALLA — The Walla Walla Association of Realtors has launched its annual food drive, the largest of its kind here.
Collection barrels have been set up at grocery stores, variety stores, schools and local businesses for the Realtor Care & Share Food Drive.
The goal is to raise 50,000 pounds of food, said food drive coordinator Peter Swant of Coldwell Banker First Realtors.
Efforts last year raised about 42,000 pounds, he said. But with the addition of new territories and help from all over the community, he believes the goal is attainable.
Donations benefit the Blue Mountain Action Council, which stocks local food pantries.
Nonperishable foods in high demand include boxed dinners, canned meats, peanut butter, baby food and commercially canned fruits and vegetables.
The drive will move to residents’ doorsteps two weeks. On Oct. 18 and 19, volunteers will drop off orange bags for food donations. Residents fill the bags and leave them out for pickup on Oct. 20.
Local Realtors have been organizing the food drive for 25 years with help from their associates, friends and families who drop off and pick up bags.
Realtors are partnering with Walla Walla School District in a variety of events to help raise awareness and donations and for pickup.
Swant said five new “territories” have been added to the route map this year making 107 territories. Teams have been largely assigned to specific areas About 32 territories have yet to be filled.
