TigerScots on winning side of blowout this time

ATHENA — You know it’s a tough night for the visitors when the home leads 52-6 at the half.

That was the case here Friday night as the host Weston-McEwen TigerScots mauled the Pilot Rock Rockets in front of a raucous crowd, 58-14.

W-M (2-1 in Blue Mountain Conference action) played almost to the best of their abilities in the lopsided win and the TigerScots coach, Kenzie Hansell, was happy for his players.

“Our kids came out and executed well on offense and defense — again got after it,” Hansell said. “A team win. I’m proud of the kids. Another great crowd and we’re excited about being 2-1 in league.”

The TigerScots held the visitors to negative-31 yards rushing and just 68 positive total yards of offense.

W-M forced a punt by the Rockets on the first possession of the game on a three-and-out.

TigerScot kick returner extraordinaire, Linton McAllister, brought the punt back 53 yards for the first touchdown of the game.

Ethan Reger ran in the 2-point conversion to make the score 8-0 TigerScots with 9:59 remaining in the first quarter.

After the Rockets received the ball on the TigerScot kickoff, the first snap from center was fumbled by Rocket quarterback Dillon Fritz.

W-M defensive end McAllister came blazing around the corner and recovered the fumble to put the TigerScots back in business at the Rocket 25-yard line.

On the next TigerScot snap, Reger ran the ball to the end zone for the score, but it was called back on a W-M illegal formation penalty.

W-M quarterback Erick Washburn was then sacked for a four-yard loss, and the home team was reeling at second-and-19.

Reger ran to rescue again, cashing in on a 34-yard touchdown gallop with good blocking and several nice cutbacks, and it was quickly 14-0 home team after the failed 2-point try just 3:21 into the game.

Another failed Rocket drive led to a punt and two TigerScot Washburn short passing completions.

That was before two Pilot Rock sacks and a touchdown of 24 yards to Lance Thacker from Washburn.

The home team piled on 21 unanswered points in the first quarter, and the TigerScots would accelerate their scoring in the second quarter to put 31 more points.

The 31 points in the second quarter was highlighted by a long touchdown pass from Washburn to Thacker once again. The quarterback hit the wide receiver about 15 yards downfield at about the 50-yard line, and Thacker used his speed to take it the remaining distance for the score.

The crooked number in the second quarter was finished off with less than a minute left in the half, as linebacker Bobby McAllister pasted a safety on the Rockets.

The second-half highlights for the TigerScots included the “D” holding the Rockets to only a single score on the strength of a Tyler Cain interception in the end zone to stop Pilot Rock in the last minutes of the game.

Cain made the interception and returned it 48 yards out to almost midfield. A play later, he took the ball — from the running back position — 50 yards on the ground for pay dirt.

“I’m really happy for the kids,” Hansell said. “We’ve had a tough time lately. The way we came out and executed tonight — I couldn’t be more proud of them.

“All of the kids are developing a little bit,” he said. “I thought we threw the ball very well and ran the ball well. The offensive line blocked well and we picked up their blitzes really well. We just executed. When you execute, it is team win and everyone contributed. It is important to see that as a coach.”

The TigerScots host Union Friday in a BMC matchup at 7 p.m.
