WALLA WALLA — Whitman College’s Kelly Sweeney has been named the Northwest Conference women’s golf Student-Athlete of the Week for her performance last weekend at the Culturame Classic.
Sweeney shot rounds of 76 and 75 on the par-73 course for a two-day total of 151, tying her with teammate Catelyn Webber for the lowest score by a Division III player.
Sweeney’s sharpshooting also aided in Whitman posting its lowest single round in program history — a 309, breaking the old record by one stroke.
Her 76 on Saturday put Sweeney in a three-way tie for the individual lead. She played the 18-hole round in just 28 putts. Sunday’s round began a bit rocky as she was 3-over-par after five holes, but then Sweeney righted the ship to birdie No. 12 and 18, bettering her first-round score by one.
Whitman finished the tournament in second place, just three strokes behind No. 7-ranked George Fox.
The Missionaries travel to Sandestin, Fla., to compete in the Golfweek Fall Preview at the Baytowne Golf Club Sunday and Monday. The field features some of the top Division III programs in the nation.
