WALLA WALLA — Dayton took care of business Thursday night in the DeSales gym as the Bulldogs defeated the Irish 25-14, 25-21, 25-19 in a Southeast 2B League volleyball match.
Dayton hiked its league record above the .500 mark at 5-4 and sent DeSales to its seventh league loss in nine tries.
Dayton is now 5-6 on the season and closes out league play Monday in College Place against Walla Walla Valley Academy. The Bulldogs entertain Weston-McEwen Wednesday in a non-league match before heading into postseason play.
DeSales also has a pair of matches remaining during the regular season. The Irish host Waitsburg-Prescott Tuesday and are home again Thursday when Riverside of Boardman, Ore., invades the Irish gym.
Sophomore Madison Mings was 16-for-16 serving, accrued 14 digs, put down seven kills and registered three blocks in a strong all-around effort for Dayton. Older sister Courtney Mings, a senior, was 10-for-11 serving and contributed 10 digs.
Sarah Phillips was credited with a team-high 15 digs, Lexie Ramirez was 15-for-16 serving with nine digs and Jenna Phillips registered five kills and eight digs.
Bryeana Myrick chalked up a team-high eight blocks and added three kills in what Dayton coach Shannon Turner called “her best game of the season so far.” Myrick is a sophomore.
Chelsea Wooldridge was Dayton’s assist leader with 16.
“DeSales is improved and playing better,” Turner said of the Irish. “It’s always tough to play them on their court. We needed to play someone who returns the ball a lot.
“But I felt we were ready to play this match, and we played well.”
DeSales’ statistical leaders were not reported.
