WALLA WALLA — After impressive early season showings, the Whitman College women’s golf team has cracked the Division III Top 25 rankings, released this week by GolfWorld and the Women’s Golf Coaches Association. The Missionaries enter the poll at No. 15.
“It is exciting for our program to receive this level of national recognition,” said Whitman coach Skip Molitor. “The team has worked hard and we are benefiting from an experienced and talented roster. While polls are noteworthy, our main focus remains on securing the AQ (automatic qualifier) from the Northwest Conference as a result of our play at in the NWC Fall Classic, the NWC Spring Classic, and the NWC Championships.”
Last year’s NWC champs, George Fox, received a No. 13 ranking in the poll. The Missionaries and the Bruins have gone head-to-head in two fall tournaments. Whitman bested George Fox by two strokes to take the title at the Pacific Invitational and the Bruins beat the Missionaries by three strokes in finishing first at the Culturame Classic.
Methodist University, the winner of last week’s GolfWeek Fall Preview, retains the No. 1 spot in the latest poll, receiving 15 first place votes. Washington University (St. Louis) is in the second slot with the University of Texas-Tyler at No. 3.
The Missionaries get a look at the Stone Creek Golf Course, site of the conference championships in two weeks, this weekend in the Fall Classic Preview, a one-round affair.
