WALLA WALLA — Puget Sound edged Whitman College, 1-0, in overtime Sunday in a hard-fought, defensive women’s Northwest Conference soccer battle at the Whitman Athletic Fields.

The Loggers scored with just over two minutes left in the first extra period, as Robin Vieira received a through ball near the top of the box, angled right and fired a shot that eluded Whitman goalkeeper Emily Davis and found its way to the inside near-corner of the goal.

Moments earlier, the Missionaries had a golden chance when Jade Anderson put a cross in front of the goal and Danielle Audino headed it, but UPS goalkeeper Lauren Thomas made a diving save to her right.

The loss drops the Missionaries to 4-7 in conference and 8-7 overall. The Loggers improve to 7-1-2, good for second place in conference, and 9-2-2 overall.

In the first half, UPS made one serious threat on goal. Vieira fired a shot from about 10 yards out, straight away, that Whitman’s Davis blocked.

Audino followed the rebound with a shot that soared over the cross bar.

The Missionaries’ best bid came late in the half when Lena de Guzman lofted a cross from the left and Hallie Swan had a good look, but the shot sailed above the cross bar.

The Loggers held the edge in shots 11-7, and shots on-goal, 6-5.

The Missionaries travel to Linfield and Pacific University at noon on Saturday and Sunday.
