PRESCOTT — Rodrigo Gonzales scored Waitsburg-Prescott’s first two goals here Friday afternoon as W-P pushed its season soccer record to 10-4 with a 5-0 nonleague win over visiting Irrigon.
Gonzales scored his first goal unassisted at the 37th minute and W-P led 1-0 at halftime. The shot was a 40-yarder, W-P assistant coach Jay Potts said.
“Rodrigo told me that he was intending to pass the ball but saw the goalkeeper start to lean,” Potts said. “So he countered with a strike to the net.”
Gonzales started the second-half scoring at the 45th minute off an assist from Armando Iglesies.
Alberto Mendez, Luis Garcia and Tyler Fedderson added second-half scores. Mendez’s goal came at 51 minutes, with Ivan Figueroa credited with an assist. Garcia’s goal at the 75th minute was unassisted, and Fedderson took an assist from Garcia for the final score at 79 minutes.
Oscar Garcia went all the way in goal for W-P and needed to make but one save. Waitsburg-Prescott, meanwhile, assaulted the Irrigon goalkeeper for 40 shots on goal, Potts said.
“We made some changes in our front five at halftime,” Potts said in explaining his team’s second-half success. “We controlled the game from the get-go, but we changed up the chemistry in the second half.
“We just couldn’t seem to get the ball in the net in the first half. In the second half we did, and pretty quickly.”
W-P closes out the regular season Monday at Moses Lake Christian in another nonleague match. Game time is 4 p.m.
The team’s first postseason game has been tentatively scheduled against Northport on Saturday at an undetermined site.
“We’re hoping it’s at our place,” Potts said.
