Hermiston man sentenced to 20 years for killing wife

Maurilio Lamas Sanchez pleaded guilty Monday morning to first-degree manslaughter for slaying his wife in 2010.

Sanchez, 48, gave the plea in Pendleton circuit court three years and one day after killing Hilaria Sanchez, 41, in their Hermiston trailer home.

Sanchez faced a murder charge, but in a deal agreed to plead to the lesser crime and accept a 20-year prison sentence, minus the three years he has been in jail. The sentence is twice the mandatory minimum. Circuit Court Judge Christopher Brauer said the state’s recommendation of 20 years was due to the crime’s aggravating circumstances of “deliberate cruelty and loss significantly greater than typical.”

Sanchez spoke through an interpretor to answer the judge's questions and affirm he agreed with the deal. Sanchez also declined to address the court.

Several member of the Sanchez family were in court, and they also declined to say anything.
