WALLA WALLA — After Whitman won the first set in Saturday night’s Northwest Conference volleyball match at Sherwood Athletic Center, George Fox reeled off three sets in-a-row to win 3-1 over the Missionaries.

On Friday, Pacific outlasted Whitman to win in five sets despite 25 kills and three serving aces from Missionary Jillian Davis.

In that match, the teams alternated winning sets, with Pacific taking the first and third sets 25-22 and 25-23, and the Missionaries prevailing in the second and third sets 25-19 and 25-19, before the Boxers won the final set 15-13, after trailing 6-2 and 8-4.

On Saturday, the Missionaries took the first set 28-26 and were on the doorstep of taking the second 24-20 when George Fox won four straight points to stay alive. The two teams battled back-and-forth with each team serving for set-point. At 28-all, the Missionaries hit a serve long and then hit an attack into the net, giving the Bruins the set 30-28 and tying the match at one set apiece.

The Missionaries took a 15-10 lead in the third set on a Megan Bafus kill, but then proceeded to watch George Fox rattle off 10 straight points to seize control of the set and the match.

During the run, Erin Campbell had four kills and assisted on a block.

The Bruins ended up winning the set, 25-17.

In the fourth set, George Fox jumped out to a 10-3 lead and appeared to be cruising to victory, but the Missionaries began to chip away and found themselves down by just three, 19-16, when Natalia Zea and Megan Bafus combined on a block. The Missionaries, then, drew within one at 23-22 on a kill by Jillian Davis.

The Bruins responded, though, with a kill by Kylee Adderson that went right in the seam of the defense and then closed out the match with a block on an attack by Davis. Davis tried to place a touch shot over the block but it was deflected back into the open court by Erin Sprowls.

Whitman was led by Davis, who finished with 18 kills and 13 digs. Franny Gardner added eight kills for Whitman and Natalia Zea finished with seven.

Saturday was Senior Night for the Missionaries as they honored Jillian Davis, Rachel Cline, Madeline Bell, Taylor Aschenbrenner and Becca Gotz.

The Missionaries visit Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound on Friday and Saturday night.
