OREGON CITY, Ore. — After posting a second-round total of 308, the Whitman College women’s golf team won the Northwest Fall Classic going away, defeating its closest competitor, George Fox, by 20 strokes, on Sunday.
The victory means the Missionaries take away the most points possible from the tournament, eight. George Fox garnered seven.
The two-day tournament was held at the Stone Creek Golf Club.
With Sunday’s round starting under windy and rainy conditions, the Missionaries carded their second lowest round of the season, following up their best total, 306, which they tallied Saturday in the opening round.
The two scores gave them at total of 614. The Bruins came in at 634, while Willamette shot a 659 to finish third.
Whitman was led by Katie Zajicek, who followed Saturday’s 75 with a 73 on Sunday, for a two-day total of 148 — a career best while at Whitman by one stroke. Zajicek eagled on the third to last hole, sinking a 160-yard uphill shot, before birdieing the final hole.
Teammate Catelyn Webber fired a 77 to finish fourth overall. Webber, who shot a 79 in the opening round, finished the fall season with 10 of her 11 rounds in the 70s.
Alyssa Maine finished with a 77 and Lou Points had an 82 to round out the scoring for the Missionaries.
Kelly Sweeney, who was second after shooting a 73 the first day, battled with a shoulder injury and ended up with a 93
“Our team showed a tremendous amount of mental toughness,” said Whitman coach Skip Molitor. “With the rainy, cold, and windy conditions at the start, we could have easily let the round go south. Instead, given the conditions, I think we shot our best round of the fall, even though we were two strokes better yesterday.”
“To win in resounding fashion was really rewarding,” he said. “We had such an outstanding fall. It was really nice to finish with such a flourish.”
Sydney Maluenda of George Fox took the medalist honors, shooting 71-75—146. Zajicek was second, and Linfield’s Abigail Heringer finished third with a 152.
The tournament signals the end of the fall season. The teams resume in the spring with two more tournaments counting toward the conference championship, the Spring Classic and the Northwest Conference Championships.
