Obama orders US flags flown at half-staff to honor Tom Foley


WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has ordered that U.S. flags be flown at half-staff at all public buildings and grounds in honor of the late House Speaker Tom Foley.

Obama issued a proclamation Monday that the flag be lowered today. A memorial service for the former speaker will be at the Capitol. Obama will deliver remarks.

Foley served in the House for 30 years. He died Oct. 18 at age 84. The Washington state Democrat served as speaker from 1989 to 1995. He was ambassador to Japan under President Bill Clinton.
