WALLA WALLA — Willem Houwink, a Walla Wallan and retired university professor, will discuss his experiences as a survivor of the Nazi concentration camps of World War II in a community presentation 1 p.m. Monday at Center at the Park, 720 Sprague Ave.

Houwink was active in the Dutch underground, fighting the Nazis after his native Holland was occupied by Germany, according to highlights of his compiled by the University of Nevada, Reno. He was apprehended by the Gestapo and spent three years in Adolf Hitler’s concentration camps, including Dachau.

After the war he became involved in the underground in Czechoslovakia against the Communists in 1948.

Houwink eventually moved to the United States and became a professor of economics at the University of Nevada, from which he retired in 1983. He then went to China and taught the principles of the free market economy.
