WALLA WALLA — Whitman College goalkeeper Emily Davis has been tabbed as the Northwest Conference’s defensive Student-Athlete of the Week for women’s soccer.
Missionary midfielder Mackenzie Hughes (Sr., Woodinville, WA) earned honorable mention.
Davis played a key role in Whitman’s victory over highly regarded Carroll University Sunday at the Whitworth Classic in Spokane.
With the game a tense, scoreless tie for the first 85 minutes, Davis denied three Carroll shots and maintained her spotless goals-against average of 0.00 as the Missionaries went onto win 1-0.
Davis also tended goal in the second half of the Missionaries’ 7-0 shutout of Northwest Christian on Friday.
In the win over the Beacons, Hughes scored the first two goals of the match — the first coming on a bending, floating corner kick that sailed over the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper.
Whitman is 2-0 for the first time since 2004, when they opened up with wins over Albertson College and the University of Redlands, whom the Missionaries face this weekend at the UC-Santa Cruz Slugfest Tournament.
