MILTON-FREEWATER — McLoughlin High School evened its girls soccer team record at 1-1 with a 2-0 win here Saturday over Redmond.

The teams battled through a scoreless 25 minutes before Makia Carlson found the back of the Redmond net for a 1-0 Mac-Hi lead.

“We started strong,” Mac-Hi coach Martin Martinez said. “We kept the pressure on them but just couldn’t score. We moved Makia to center mid field and she got off a shot to score.”

Eight minutes after Carlson broke the scoreless deadlock, Veronica Garcia fired a shot from the left side that hit the bottom of the cross bar and dropped across the goal line for a 2-0 Mac-Hi lead.

Redmond mounted a threat with a one-on-one break away, but Mallory Copeland, in goal for the Pioneers, was up to the task. Copeland deflected the shot away and Redmond had no other threats.

The two teams played a scoreless second half, but the Pioneers came away with the 2-0 win.

“In the second half, we started playing down to their level,” Martinez said. “We didn’t keep the pressure on and we lost our shape.”

Martinez was happy to see his team bounce back from its opening loss.

“Overall, it was a good game,” Martinez said. “We have to work to maintain our aggressiveness and not play down to their level.”

The Pioneers host Riverside Tuesday.
