SPOKANE — Walla Walla Community College opened the Spokane Invite crossover volleyball tournament with a 2-1 Friday record before going 1-1 Saturday to finish the tournament 3-2.
The Warriors dropped a four-set match to Clackamas, 17-25, 25-21, 25-21,25-18, Friday to open the tournament. WWCC bounced back to defeat Bellevue, 25-16, 25-18, 22-25, 25-17, and Linn-Benon, 23-25, 28-26, 17-25, 25-19, 17-15.
The Warriors split Saturday with a pair of Eastern Region foes. Spokane upended the Warriors in four, 25-17, 19-25, 25-17, 25-20 to open Saturday action. The Warriors bounced back to take a five-set match from Columbia Basin. The Hawks took a set four 26-24 win to force a fifth and deciding set. WWCC prevailed with a 15-10 win.
“This tournament had a championship feel,” WWCC coach Tim Toon said. “We had to get better or go home with a losing record. We made some huge plays along the way. This team is going to be good, it’s just going to take a while.”
JaLisa Jose blasted 64 kills to lead the Warrior hitters for the tournament. Chantelle Zamora added 50 kills to go with 55 digs. Jose led the blockers with 25. Breanna Mehling with 110 assists and Allie Johnson with 101 led the Warrior setters. Devin Casterline led the servers with nine aces. Delaney Fisher chipped in 59 digs and seven serving aces. Denise Comfort with 34 kills and Jade Byce with 23 kills added to the Warrior effort.
WWCC, 6-6 overall, travels to Yakima Friday to open East Region play against the Yaks.
