County to renew talks on recreational pot moratorium

WALLA WALLA — A possible moratorium on zoning and permitting marijuana operations in unincorporated areas of Walla Walla County will be back up for discussion Monday.

County commissioners will resume deliberations on the topic when they meet at the county Public Health and Legislative Building, 214 W. Main St. The matter is scheduled to come before the board at 10 a.m.

After taking testimony at their Sept. 3, commissioners continued the hearing until Monday to allow more time for written comments to be submitted and to allow staff time to work on the issue.

Although Initiative 502 legalized the production, process and sale of marijuana for recreational use, many local governments have been grappling with how to create zoning and permitting requirements for marijuana operations.

Some municipalities, such as Seattle, are moving ahead with developing ordinances while other entities, such as Waitsburg and College Place, have either adopted or are drawing up moratoriums to allow them more time to assess the ramifications of legalization.
