UNION, Ore. — Despite losing a shoe in the first half-mile of the race, McLoughlin High’s Josie Lonai continued her strong cross country season with a third-place finish at the Catherine Creek Scamper here Friday.
“She keeps getting stronger and stronger every week, and we hope to build off that strength, Pioneer coach John Milleson said. “She ran the last two-and-a-half miles without a shoe, so she had a phenomenal race.
“Our younger girls stepped up and ran better race today, they keep improving,” he said.
On the boys’ side, Austin Cousineau had the highest finish at 13th or 14th, Milleson said.
“It was not his greatest race, but it was a pretty strong race on a tough course,” he said. “He’s running solidly.
“We had a hard week of practice, and they all went in healthy but stiff and sore,” Milleson said.

Mac-Hi next heads to the Connell Invite next Saturday.
