PRESCOTT — Riverside High School (of Boardman, Ore.) scored seven second-half goals to hand Waitsburg-Prescott’s soccer team an 8-2 interstate loss Friday.
W-P hung with Riverside for the first 40 minutes and went to intermission up 2-1, but Riverside wore down the W-P defense and ran away with the win in the second half.
Arnesto Valdovinos got the ball to Rodrigo Gonzalez in the 15th minute. Gonzalez finished and W-P took a 1-0 lead.
After Riverside came back to tie in the 20th minute, W-P retook the lead as Ivan Figueroa, again on an assist from Valdovinos, gave W-P its last lead of the afternoon at 2-1 in the 35th minute.
“They are pretty good,” W-P assistant coach Jay Potts said. “We are young and I was proud with how we held our own in the first half.”
Riverside got it tied three minutes into the second half, and took the lead for good in the 47th minute. Riverside put this one away with four goals in the last 10 minutes.
“Our defense got tired,” Potts said. “We gave up goals we shouldn’t have, but Riverside controlled the game a lot.”
W-P goalkeeper Christian Caro posted 15 saves in the loss.
“Christian did a great job,” Potts said. “None of his saves were easy.”
W-P, 0-1, travels to Yakima for a match with Riverside Christian Tuesday.
“We hope to clear up some eligibility issues and have some more experienced players back for Tuesday,” Potts said. “We look forward to playing Riverside again later in the season.”
