WALLA WALLA — Walla Walla Community College’s volleyball team claimed a second-place finish during an NWAACC crossover tournament that wrapped up Saturday in the Dietrich Dome.
The Warriors lost to Bellevue, 25-14, 25-14, 26-24 in Saturday’s championship match.
WWCC ended up 5-1 in tourney play and are now 13-6 overall.
Statistical leaders for Walla Walla included Chantelle Zamora with 85 kills, 104 digs, and six aces, JaLisa Jose with 74 kills, 54 digs, and 27 blocks, and Allie Johnson with 131 assists.
All three athletes were named to the all-tournament team.
“I am so proud of Chantelle (Zamora),” WWCC coach Tim Toon said. “She worked really hard as a redshirt last year and it is great to see her get rewarded. Although she is considered a freshman, she plays a whole lot more like a seasoned sophomore.
“We have asked JaLisa to be an anchor in the front row and back row,” Toon said. “We nearly killed her this weekend with so much playing time, but we can’t afford to take her out. She is very valuable to this team.
“Allie brings a lot of energy to the court and the team plays hard when she is running the offense,” Toon said. “She had a really nice weekend.”
The best of the rest for WWCC were Breanna Mehling (157 setting assists), Delaney Fisher (56 digs, seven aces), Devin Casterline (72 digs), Kiendra Chester (47 kills), and Denise Comfort (57 kills).
“I was very pleased with our performance this weekend,” Toon said. “We beat some really good teams and made significant strides in becoming one of the best teams in the NWAACC. I wish all 13 players on the active roster could get recognized. We got great contributions from all.”
The Warriors return to NWAACC Eastern Region play this week. They host Treasure Valley on Wednesday and Big Bend on Friday.
