SALEM — Kelsey Peck scored her second goal of the season and Brianna Brown her first, as the Whitman women’s soccer team beat Willamette 2-1 in Northwest Conference action here Saturday afternoon.

The Missionaries are now 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Bearcats are 2-4 and 0-2.

“We had a real battle,” said Whitman head coach Heather Cato. “We went down early but rallied together and relied on multiple players.”

Peck broke a 1-1 tie at the 56:13 mark when she received a pass near the goal and stuck the ball in the net from an acute angle. The assist went to Brown, who had scored late in the first half to tie the game up.

With just under three minutes remaining in the opening stanza, Brown picked up a loose ball and fired a shot from 18 yards away that went into the lower right-hand side of the net.

Willamette had taken an early 1-0 lead at the 17:22 mark when Rachel Fleener uncorked a shot from 15 yards out.

Whitman dominated the offensive end in the first half, outshooting the Bearcats 5-1. They held a 4-2 advantage in the second half.

Whitman goalkeeper Emily Davis got the win to improve her record to 5-1.

The Missionaries finish their weekend road trip today with a visit to Lewis & Clark.
