PORTLAND — The second day of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships at Lewis & Clark College saw Whitman College’s Courtney Lawless, the tournament’s overall No. 1 seed, advance to the singles semifinals and two Whitman doubles teams make the semifinals, potentially setting up a Whitman vs. Whitman final.
Lawless defeated Kaitlyn Lomatire of Pacific University in the quarterfinals 6-3, 6-4. In the semifinals today, Lawless faces No. 3-seed Caroline Brigham of Linfield at 11:30 a.m., with the finals later in the day.
Whitman’s Katrina Allick advanced to the quarterfinals, where she lost to No. 2-seeded Saryn Mooney of Whitworth, 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles, the No. 1-seeded team of Courtney and Morgan Lawless notched an 8-4 win in their quarterfinal, and Missionaries Allick and Erin Bell won their quarterfinal, 8-4. The teams are on opposite sides of the bracket.
The Lawless twins faced Brigham and Mackenzie Fraser of Linfield, while Allick and Bell faced Mooney and Taylor Pena of Whitworth, this morning.
The champions in singles and doubles receive an automatic berth to the USTA/ITA Small College National Championships, Oct 9-13, in Fort Meyers, Fla.
