IRRIGON, Ore. — Waitsburg-Prescott scored early and often to record a 4-1 soccer victory over Irrigon here Thursday.
“We jumped up early, and things clicked pretty fast for us,” W-P assistant coach Jay Potts said.
Ivan Figueroa opened scoring in the first minute for W-P off an assist by Ernesto Valdonivos.
Two minutes later, Luis Garcia took a cross from Jonny Escalante for the second goal of the match.
“Jonny put a nice cross up, and Luis headed it in,” Potts said.
In the sixth minute, Figueroa got his second goal of the match off an assist by Jose Paniagua, and the 3-0 lead held up at halftime.
Irrigon got on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute, but Garcia put his second ball in the net in the 72nd minute to end scoring.
“They made adjustments and we didn’t counter-adjust very well,” Potts said of Irrigon. “We kept doing what we were doing while they were adjusting.”
Christian Caro had seven saves in goal for W-P.
“He did pretty well,” Potts said of his goalie. “They (Irrigon) got through our defense, but our back to kept them from the goal. Irrigon is a pretty good team, and we held our own,” he said.
Next up for W-P is a real test in Spokane at 2:30 p.m. Saturday against St. George’s, the No. 1 Class 2B team in the state.
“It’s always been a big matchup for us, and it will be again,” Potts said. “We’re looking forward to it.”
