Cox leads Wa-Hi at Nike Pre Nationals

PORTLAND — Courtney Cox’s fifth-place finish led Walla Walla High School at the 124-school Nike Pre Nationals Saturday Saturday.

The meet drew teams from as far as Colorado and California and was broken up into four varsity divisions. The Blue Devil girls ran in Division 1, the second-highest classification behind the Jim Danner Championship flight for high schools of national ranking.

Wa-Hi’s boys ran in Division 2.

Cox ran the 5-kilometer course in 20:00.88 to finish in fifth place out of 148.

Maizy Brewer of Skyline High School (Sammamish, Wash.) won the race in 19:49.9. Cox just missed fourth place as Liberty High School’s Rachel Khaw edged Cox in 20:00.6.

Poly High School of Long Beach, Calif., won the Division 1 team title with 101 points. Capital, of Olympia, edged the Blue Devils as the Cougars took fifth with 204 points to Wa-Hi’s 205.

In boys Division 2, Juan Cortez paced Wa-Hi to a seventh-place finish. Cortez finished 11th in a field of 170 in 17:24.38. Sherwood High School of Shoreline, Wash., won the Division 1 team title with 99 points. The Blue Devils scored 239 to finish seventh. Meridian Idaho’s Dwain Stucker won the race in 16:27.27.

The Jim Danner team title went to Gig Harbor and Matthew Maton of Summit High School (Bend, Ore.) won the Jim Danner race with a 15:57.99 run.

Hannah Hampson was the only other Blue Devil to finish in the top 30 in the girls’ division one race. Hampson was 30th in 20:56,99. Lea Davidson (21:36.91), Catherine Feistner (21:45.79), Erika Leinweber (21:52.35), Jenny Wall (22:23.28), and Emily Leinweber (23:03.50) competed for Wa-Hi.

On the boys side, Wa-Hi had three in the top 60. After Cortez, Isaac Mata finished 35th in 17:49.63 and Jacob Leinweber was 59th in 18:10.71. Michael Anderson (18:18.17), Dan Butler (18:20.56), Alex Iben (18:48.52), and Blase Wolpert (18:47.79) completed the Blue Devil contingent.
