ATHENA — The Grant Union Prospectors struck gold in their quest for a victory here Friday night, hammering away at the Weston-McEwen TigerScots for a 48-0 victory.
“It is just a great group of guys to coach,” Grant Union head coach Jason Miller said. “They are a lot of fun and everything I ask them to do, they do. I just draw it up. They have to perform it and they are doing a great job.”
GU is now 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in Blue Mountain Conference play.
Weston-McEwen sits at 1-1 in BMC play, 1-3 overall.
The TigerScots mustered just 35 yards of offense and three first downs in the game. Their six turnovers didn’t allow them to gain any momentum on offense.
In comparison, the Prospectors chipped away at W-M with seven first downs on offense. They had one turnover and picked up 162 yards passing and 204 yards rushing.
W-M was torched by the big play, giving up two touchdown passes from 50 yards out and one from 32 yards away.
The TigerScots also gave up a 45-yard touchdown run by Kody Nelson.
Grant Union dominated this one from the outset.
On the first play from the line of scrimmage, GU’s Lane Williams broke a 48-yard run before W-M’s Cedric Hall made a touchdown-saving tackle at the 12-yard line.
That just delayed this, however, as the Prospectors were able to score two plays later on a Kody Nelson seven-yard run, capped off by Levi McClellan run for a 2-point conversion with less than two minutes elapsed.
A three-and-out for W-M and a long punt from Linton McAllister to force the touchback for the Prospectors followed, as GU quarterback Dalton Reimers muffed the first snap in the pouring rain and mud. Reimers recovered the ball, but lost eight yards on the sack from Jason Bushman.
The stop was short-lived as the TigerScots fumbled the ball on the kick return.
With great field position, GU scored four plays later as Reimer kept it and punched it in to push the lead to 14-0 with 4:13 in the first quarter.
A squib kickoff that followed was recovered by Grant Union as rain continued to pour and field conditions kept deteriorating.
The Prospectors fumbled on 4th-and-six, but the TigerScots gave it back two plays later with a fumble.
This time the Prospectors capitalized with another touchdown on a Nelson run of 45 yards to give GU a 22-0 lead with 1:13 remaining in the first after another two-point conversion.
Another onside/squib kick was relinquished by the TigerScots in the ensuing GU kickoff.
“The onside kicks weren’t even designed as onside,” Miller said. “They were just squibs. In the nasty weather, they are always hard to handle. Our guys did run down there and got the ball.”
Soon it was 28-0 Prospectors, and then 34-0.
The TigerScots suffered from a stagnant offense that never really gave the defense a break. Special teams lost three fumbles, another one on the offense and two interceptions.
The W-M defense was stingy at times, forcing two turnovers on downs, a punt and a turnover of its own. The team also had nine tackles for losses.
“That is tough with the conditions,” W-M coach Kenzie Hansell said. “Give Grant Union credit, they got after us. They minimized their mistakes ... They’re well disciplined. They executed well on offense and got after it on defense.
“We had some costly turnovers and that got the game out of hand a little bit,” he said. “We need to take care of the ball better. That is what we are going to focus on. Work on our fundamentals and get better. Take care of the ball better and then we will continue to improve each day and game.”
W-M hosts Pilot Rock Friday at 7 p.m.
