WALLA WALLA — The DeSales baseball team jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first inning and never looked back, as the Irish downed Mac-Hi, 8-0, on Tuesday.
Cam Richman got the offense going in the first as he led off with a single. After he swiped second, Ty Jacobson brought Richman home with an RBI single. Adam Eskil then scored Jacobson with a single. Darryl Galloway followed Eskil with a walk and Matt Jubb was hit by a pitch, which brought up Jackson Kent. Kent promptly added two more DeSales runs with a single.
“It was good to see us with a really, good competitive mentality to start the game,” DeSales coach Kim Cox said. “We were on balls pretty well — they were hard hit line drives most of them. The kids did a good job running the bases.”
Richman also got the start for the Irish, as he threw six innings, allowing just two hits. Eskil finished the seventh in order to preserve the win.
“Their pitchers are outstanding,” Mac-Hi coach Michael Garcia said. “Richman kept our hitters guessing and he showed why he is so dominant. Eskil then came in and closed out the game.”
Mac-Hi allowed just two runs after the first inning, but could not advance base runners on the Irish hurlers. With league play set to open soon, Garcia said his team must be ready to get back to work.
“We have got some work to do in these upcoming two weeks and we need to make sure that our focus and enthusiasm are at the highest level,” Garcia said.
DeSales hosts Dayton for a doubleheader on Saturday. Mac-Hi hosts Woodburn on Saturday.
