W-P softball team sweeps Liberty

PRESCOTT — Waitsburg-Prescott’s softball team rode a 10-run first inning in the nightcap to sweep visiting Liberty (Spangle) here Thursday.

W-P’s opening 10-2 victory was followed by a 15-13 squeaker for the sweep.

“In game one, we hit the ball really well and played outstanding defense,” W-P coach Angie Potts said. “Hannah Grant had a solo home run in the third inning, and Paige Wood had a two-run home run in the fourth.

“In the second game, their pitcher struggled in the first inning and we were able to get off to a fast start with good hitting that moved runners around,” she said. “Logn Harshman had six RBI in the second game, with three doubles.”

W-P answered Liberty’s two-run first inning in the opener with three of its own to take the lead for good and cruise to the victory.

The big first inning in the nightcap was followed by Liberty’s three runs in the second, and six in the third to pull within 10-9. W-P plated three in the fourth, but the Lancers tied it at 13-all in the fifth.

W-P scored twice in the sixth to secure the sweep.

“After that first inning, we got a little complacent and let down on both offense and defense,” Potts said. “Fortunately, we were able to push the extra runs across the plate when we needed to hold on for the win.

“It’s always good to face a District 7 team, so we were looking forward to these games.”

W-P, now 4-5 overall and 0-2 in Southeast 2B League play, is off for spring break before hosting Pomeroy for a single game on April 15.
