SPANGLE, Wash. — Pomeroy got stalwart pitching from its bevy of young hurlers Saturday in a baseball doubleheader against Liberty as the Pirates defeated the Lancers 2-1 and 9-2.
The Pirate pitchers gave up just seven hits on the day.
Pomeroy’s Cade Gingerich got the start in game one, giving up one run in five innings while striking out eight and issuing two walks. Hogan and Havin Heytvelt held the Lancers scoreless in relief in the sixth and seventh innings.
Liberty scored first with a run in the third on a walk, a single and a passed ball, but the Pirates answered with all the scoring they would need in the sixth.
Havin Heytvelt led off with a single and took second on an error. Gingerich provided the equalizer with an RBI single and wound up scoring the winning run on a Cody LaMunyan sac-fly to right field.
Liberty’s Kyle King pitched a complete game in the opener.
“This King from what I gather is one of their better pitchers,” Pomeroy coach Dave Boyer said. “Good kid — he pitched well against us and it took us a while to get going against him.”
Pomeroy had no such trouble in the nightcap, as the Pirates scored five runs in the first inning and cruised to the win from there. Liberty issued 14 walks over the course of the game.
With a hefty lead, the Pirates rotated through their bullpen, sending five different pitchers to the mound.
“These were all pretty young pitchers,” Boyer said. “I just can’t say enough abut how they pitched today. Their performance was fantastic.”
The Pirates (4-2-1 overall) open Southeast 1B play with a doubleheader against Rosalia Saturday.
