VANCOUVER, Wash. — Whitman and George Fox were originally scheduled to contest their Northwest Conference men’s tennis match on Friday, in Newberg, Ore., on the Bruins’ campus.
The rain had other ideas — and granted George Fox a reprieve.
It was temporary.
Two days later, on indoor courts in Whitman’s home state, the 14th-ranked Missionaries continued their impersonation of a runaway freight train, sweeping past the Bruins 9-0 here Sunday at Club Green Meadows to remain perfect in NWC play with three matches remaining in the season.
Whitman (12-3, 9-0) has won four consecutive matches and seven of its last eight. It set the tone against a formidable George Fox squad by sweeping doubles play, dropping just seven sets in the process.
Colton Malesovas and Andrew La Cava grinded out an 8-5 win at first doubles, Jake Hoeger and Andy Riggs skunked their foes 8-0 at second doubles and Steven Roston and James Rivers handled third doubles 8-2.
The Bruins, who entered the weekend ranked 12th in the region and tied with Pacific for second place in the NWC, pushed several singles matches to the limit.
But the Missionaries prevailed in all. Roston survived 7-6, 7-6 at second singles in the final match of the afternoon, after Rivers used a 10-4 tiebreaker win to claim a sixth-singles match that had been halved 6-2, 2-6.
La Cava prevailed 7-5, 6-4 at first singles, Riggs won 7-6, 6-0 at third singles, Petar Jivkov won 6-1, 6-0 at fourth singles, and Hoeger scored a 6-3, 6-1 win at fifth singles.
Whitman, ranked fourth in the region, visits Whitworth on Wednesday.
