LEWISTON — The Walla Walla High School baseball team split a doubleheader with Lewiston here on Monday.
The Blue Devils (5-1) opened with a 9-0 win before losing 9-3 in the nightcap.
In game one, Wa-Hi opened a 4-0 lead after the third inning. Ali Buentello and Blake McKinney opened the third with back-to-back singles, before Spencer Locati picked them up with a two-run triple.
Zach Zehner then scored Locati with a sacrifice fly.
Zehner also hit a solo homer in the sixth inning to give the Blue Devils a 5-0 lead.
Starting pitcher Ryan Kimball also kept the Lewiston bats at bay, as he went six innings without allowing a run and striking out three.
“Ryan Kimball had his second strong outing in a row on the mound,” Wa-Hi coach Keith Gradwohl said. “Lewiston has a strong baseball tradition, so going on the road and getting a split was positive.”
In the second game, Lewiston plated six runs in the second inning and didn’t look back.
Wa-Hi’s Reid Magnaghi finished with three hits in the game.
Wa-Hi opens Mid-Columbia Conference play on Friday against Chiawana.
“We start league play on Friday and we feel like we are ready to go as a team,” Gradwohl said.
