Mac-Hi, Helix tennis teams tangle in M-F

MILTON-FREEWATER — Helix’s tennis players turned in some good performances against McLoughlin High here Wednesday, winning two boys singles matches and a girls singles match.

In boys singles, Mac-Hi’s Juan Garcia shut out the Grizzlies’ Jon Shaw, 8-0, to open play.

Then, Helix’s Erik Jones handed Pioneer Rigo Ponce an 8-5 defeat, and teammate Allan Holden downed Mac-Hi’s Connor Humbert, 8-5.

In boys doubles play, the Pioneer duo of Miguel Perez and Allan Ng beat Helix’s Shaw and Holden, 8-3.

In girls singles, the Grizzlies’ Paige Gabriel handed Mac-Hi’s Karen Steele an 8-3 defeat.

“Karen is a freshman and first-time tennis player,” Pioneer coach Michelle Snyder said. “I am so proud of how hard she works and continues to improve her game play.”

In girls doubles play, the Pioneers’ Giselle Flores and Jacky Reyes defeated Sierra Bryant and Kyla Roberts, 8-2.

The Grizzlies next play Umatilla and Weston-McEwen next Thursday.

Mac-Hi hosts Umatilla at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
