SPOKANE — The Whitman men’s tennis team stayed undefeated in Northwest Conference play with a commanding 9-0 sweep against Whitworth on Wednesday.
The No. 14 Missionaries ran their season record to 13-3 overall and 10-0 in the NWC.
It was a quick day for the Whitman singles players, as the No. 1 through No. 5 players won in straight sets. No. 1 player Colton Malesovas beat Drew Brigham, 6-2, 6-3. Teammate Andrew La Cava, in the No. 2 spot, downed John Talbot 6-2, 6-4. Steven Roston followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Chris Engelmann at No. 3.
Andy Riggs and James Rivers rounded out the straight set wins, as Riggs won 6-3, 6-0 and Rivers rolled 6-1, 6-0. Parker Silverman was the lone Whitman player to lose a set, as he dropped the first set, 6-4, to Whitworth’s Shane Sandlin before winning the second set, 6-4, and the tiebreaker, 12-10.
Whitman also shined in doubles play, as Riggs and Roston matched up to beat Brigham and Sandlin in the No. 1 spot, 8-6. La Cava and Silverman followed them with an 8-6 win over Whitworth’s Blake Miller and Matt Goebel. Malesovas and Rivers rounded out doubles play with an 8-5 win over Talbot and Adams.
The Missionaries hosts Lewis & Clark State on Friday.
