Pomeroy baseball team scores 17-7 win


POMEROY — Pomeroy roared back from a 7-1 deficit here in Southeast 1B baseball action here Saturday. The Pirates exploded for 16 runs over the last three innings to defeat Rosalia 17-7 in the opener of the SE1B twin bill.

The Spartans returned the favor in the nightcap, however, as Rosalia pounded out 14 hits and scored a 17-1 win over the Pirates.

Ryan Maley’s grand slam gave Rosalia a 7-1 lead heading to the home fourth in the opener. The Pirates scored four in the home fourth to get back in this one. Pomeroy kept adding on with seven in the fifth and five more in the sixth to take the 17-7 win.

Haven Heytvelt went the distance on the mound for the Pirates and added two hits to the Pirate 10-hit attack. Eighth grader Ryan Wolf was thrust into the starting lineup due to previous commitments of regulars and came up with a two-hit, three-run, two RBI performance. Cade Gingerich added two hits to the Pirate offensive attack.

“We were behind 7-1,” Pirate coach Dave Boyer said. “We came back and started scoring. They changed pitchers and we continued to score. Everybody contributed.”

Game two belonged to Maley. Maley stopped the Pirates by pitching a four hitter and he led the offense with four hits.

“Maley was the story,” Boyer said. “His hitting and pitching was enough, all by himself, to beat us. Nothing but praise for Maley, he is a real ball player.”

Pomeroy moves to 1-1 in SE1B action, 5-3-1 overall.

The Pirates travel to Prescott Tuesday for a non-league battle with Waitsburg-Prescott.
