TRI-CITIES — Walla Walla High School’s boys and girls tennis teams finished seventh of 16 Class 3A and 4A schools at high schools around the Tri-Cities Friday and Saturday.
“This was a great experience for all of our players,” Blue Devil boys coach Bryan Eggart said. “I was very pleased that a majority of our boys’ team placed and that they were able to play four quality matches during the weekend.”
“The Tri City Invite is always a great opportunity to see different competition and play a lot of matches in a short time,” Wa-Hi girls coach Keven Peck said. “Saturday is always a long and exhausting day, but it is was worth every minute for the mental and physical experience we gain. I was really proud of how the girls embraced each opportunity to get better.”
For the Blue Devil boys, Cole Woelfle finished 4-0 to win at No. 4 singles, and Micah Rambo was 3-1 for third had at No. 3 singles.
“I was very pleased with Cole Woelfle’s win at No. 4 singles,” Eggart said. “He played a very tough final against a returning singles player from Chiawana High School out of Pasco, Luis Mendoza. This match was an absolute dog fight. Both players competed every single point of the match. It was outstanding tennis.”
Rambo had a “golden set” during his second-round match, winning 24 straight points.
“This is an outstandings achievement and rarely accomplished,” Eggart said.
On the girls’ side, “All of our singles players (Lexi Swenson, Jade Cramer, Taylor Richardson and Ali Beigh) all ran up against tough competition,” Peck said. “And, despite not placing, played really well.
“Our No.1 doubles team of Jazmin Duran and Kennlyn Willard started strong, but struggled on Saturday afternoon against some good doubles teams,” he said. “However, our No.2 doubles team of Catelyn Buettner and Liya Senter had two wins and two loses to place sixth. It was Catelyn’s and Liya’s first real chance to play together, and they showed well.”
In mixed doubles, Eric Klicker and Jamie Quaresma teamed up to finish 3-1 for second place.
“I thought the performance of both our doubles teams was exceptional, placing fourth (Gerrod Peck and Colton Norsworthy) and fifth (Malcolm Gabbard and Nick Fuller) and having a 3-1 record in this tournament is an outstanding performance,” Eggart said. “The senior tandem of Quaresma and Klicker at No. 2 mixed doubles placing second was a great way to finish off the weekend for both the boys and girls programs.”
“We played a lot of tennis against some good competition,” Peck said. “The most important thing is that we used this tournament as a chance to get better as individuals and as a team.”
