MILTON-FREEWATER — The McLoughlin High School baseball team dropped a nonleague game to Pendleton, 15-5, on Tuesday.
The Buckaroos’ extra base hits were costly, Mac-Hi coach Mike Garcia said, as Pendleton raced to a 11-1 lead after the top of the third inning.
But the Pioneers responded with four runs of its own in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to six.
“They’re coached well,” Garcia said. “They run the bases really well. After three innings, I thought we were at least going to make it a game. Then they started right where they left off in those first two innings.”
Pendleton plated four runs in the fifth to end the game early via the 10-run mercy rule. Hunter Yensen led the Mac-Hi offense with two hits, as the Pioneers finished with eight hits.
“We’re always willing to go up against quality teams like that and see where we’re at,” Garcia said. “We played DeSales earlier in the season and we were able to see where we were at then. And like Pendleton last night, it’s nice to have those on the schedule.”
Mac-Hi (4-4 overall, 0-2 in Greater Oregon League) travels to a doubleheader at Baker on Saturday.
