Pioneers steal show at WWVA Invite

MILTON-FREEWATER — McLoughlin High’s Tristin Warne headlined Walla Walla Valley Academy’s District 9 invitational meet at Shockman Field here Wednesday, winning three individual events and helping the Pioneer 4x100 relay team to a victory.

Warne led the Mac-Hi boys team to a first-place finish among six teams with 191 team points.

Pioneer Aaron Lefore won the shot put and the discus.

Mario Carillo took third in the javelin and Tyler Edwards had a first in the high jump and 400.

Mac-Hi’s Amber Wells won the javelin, took second in the shot put and third in the discus to lead her Pioneer girls team to first place with 172 points. To top it all off, she was the winner in the triple jump.

Another Pioneer girl, Kristi Childers, won the 100 and 200 meters, while finishing second in the 100 hurdles.

Susana Romero-diaz won the long jump (13 feet, 11 inches) and the 800 for Mac-Hi.

Jessica Dodd took third in the long jump, and Alicia Walter was third in the javelin (80-05).

Waitsburg-Prescott took third in the boys events and fifth in the girls completion.

Kevin Aquino, Owen Lanning and E.J. Meserve were the leaders in the W-P boys team. Aquino took third in the 100 and second in the 400. Lanning took second in the 110 hurdles (16.97) and runner-up in the 300 hurdles. Meserve was first in the 3,200 and second in the 1,600 (5:15.07).

W-P’s Emily Adams won the 3,200 and 400 meters. Beka Adams was impressive in the shot put (third) and was tops in the discus.

“We had a lot of good performances,” W-P coach Jeff Bartlow said. “I’m pleased after the week we basically took off for spring break. The last meet we had was the Carnival of Speed, which was a week and a half ago.”

Pomeroy took third in the boys (64 points) and fourth in the girls (54.5 points).

Memo Morphin took first in the javelin and tied for first with Cole Mayfield in the pole vault (10-06). Mayfield also placed second in the long jump and high jump.

The girls of Pomeroy were best with Skylar Smith in the pole vault at first and Pearl Blachly second in the high jump.

The DeSales Irish took fourth in the boys division and third in the girls. Juan Cortez was the best boys Irish participant with a first in the 1,600 and Allison Wujek led the girls with a 100 hurdles victory and a first in the high jump.

“A lot of kids were about right where they needed to be after spring break,” Irish coach Mike Scheel said. “Almost near-personal bests, but not quite there, that will come next week after more practice and conditioning.”

Walla Walla Valley Academy took fifth in the boys and sixth in the girls groupings.

Caleb Atkins grabbed a first in the 200 and a second in the 100 for the host Knights. Abbie Underhill placed a first in the 400, second in the 200, and fourth in the 100 for the Knights.

The Weston-McEwen TigerScot girls had a great showing of second place, while the boys finished sixth.

Madison Carlin captured second in the 100, and Alli Cain took first in the shot and fifth in the discus. Shylee Stroud took third in the 800. Melanie Sederburg pole vaulted to second place.

Ian Speed took third in the 800 and Shaw Broncheau claimed fourth in the 200 meters. Clayton Gaines was second in the shot, and third in the discus.

“We’ve trained hard throughout the early week,” W-M coach Loran Monaco said. “Yesterday and the day before, we really worked hard, so we weren’t expecting all that much, but we really were happy to be at this meet to compete.”
