ST. JOHN — Dayton restricted St. John-Endicott/Lacrosse Washtucna to just two runs combined in a Southeast 2B baseball doubleheader here Saturday.
The Bulldogs scored twice in the seventh to pull out a 3-1 win in the opener and pounded out 10 hits to take an 8-1 decision in the night cap.
Pitcher Lowden Smith checked SJELW on two hits and struck out 14, but the Bulldogs came to bat in the top of the seventh in a 1-1 tie.
Zach Waggoner and Chan Kim started the seventh with hits for the Bulldogs. Christian Warner put Dayton on top with an RBI single and Guy Spalinger added an insurance run with a sac fly, as Dayton pulled out the 3-1 win.
“The first game was real good baseball,” Bulldog coach Sal Benavides said. “We didn’t hit very well until the seventh. If we play good defense, we can play with anyone with Lowden on the mound.”
Waggoner and Kim led the Bulldog offense with two hits each.
The Bulldogs kept pecking away in game two, as they scored in four different innings to back the four-hit pitching performance of Spalinger.
Logan Hays, Smith, Spalinger and Warner led the Bulldog 10-hit attack with two hits each.
“Guy didn’t strike out many, but we played good defense behind him,” Benavides said. “I was proud of all the guys today.”
Dayton improves to 2-2 in the SE2B and 7-3 overall. The Bulldogs host Touchet Tuesday in a non-league game before hosting Asotin Wednesday in a SE2B double dip.
