TOUCHET — The Dayton High School baseball team posted nine runs in the top of the sixth to take a 14-4 win against Touchet on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs, who held a 5-4 lead heading into the sixth, took advantage of five walks over the final two frames and moved runners around the bases with five hits in the sixth alone.
“We hit the ball really well that inning,” Dayton coach Sal Benavides said. “We were already hitting it but we had some timely hits. Everyone in the lineup hit the ball really hard.”
“They did hit the ball well,” Touchet coach Tim McKeown said. “They hit when it counted and stole the bases when they needed to. They did a pretty good job.”
Dayton starter Logan Hayes, who hadn’t pitched since March 6, was thrust into action because of Dayton’s upcoming schedule. The Bulldogs play eight games in seven days, Benavides said, which forced him to juggle his pitchers.
“We were going there not knowing if we were going to win or not,” Benavides said. “(Then) they got within a run (in the fifth) and I was going to make a move, but we scored nine runs and Logan finished it off.”
Touchet pitcher Colter McKeown, who relieved starting pitcher Connor McKeown, struggled a bit with command over the final three innings, but Tim McKeown said it was good experience.
“Colter struggled a bit,” Tim McKeown said. “But we’ve got to give him that time on the mound because we’re going to have to use him soon.”
Dayton (8-3 overall, 2-2 in Southeast 2B) hosts Asotin today. Touchet (3-6 overall, 1-3 in Southeast 1B) plays at Weston-McEwen on Thursday and faces Liberty-Christian Saturday.
