MILTON-FREEWATER — Hunter Yensen collected four hits and Chase Copenhaver drove home four runs here Tuesday at McRae/Ireland Field as Mac-Hi edged Weston-McEwen 8-6 in a non-league prep baseball game.
Trailing 3-1 after five innings of play, the TigerScots struck for four runs in the top of the sixth inning only to see the Pioneers answer with a five-spot in the bottom of the frame.
“I thought we played very well,” Mac-Hi coach Mike Garcia said. “Weston-McEwen is not a bad team and their pitcher did a really good job.”
Lance Thacker pitched into the sixth inning for W-M before running out of gas.
“Lance did a good job of keeping their hitters off balance, but his pitch count got up there in the sixth inning,” TigerScots coach TJ Haguewood said.
Copenhaver delivered the key hit of Mac-Hi’s five-run sixth inning with a bases-clearing double, his second hit of the game.
“Chase Copenhaver had a double and a triple and four RBIs,” Garcia said of his senior shortstop. “And Hunter Yensen, who is only a sophomore, knocked in three runs. They both pulled through for us.”
“Copenhaver was a thorn in our side,” Haguewood said. “But overall we came out and competed well. I’m proud of the way we battled the entire game.”
Jared Croswell paced Weston-McEwen’s eight-hit attack with two doubles and two singles. Cedric Hall contributed a pair of base hits.
Mac-Hi improved to 5-6 on the season and takes a 0-4 Greater Oregon League record into a pair of games here Saturday at noon.
The TigerScots are back in action Thursday when they entertain Touchet in a single non-league game beginning at 4 p.m..
