MILTON-FREEWATER – McLoughlin High School’s tennis team played a rain-shortened match against the Griswold Grizzlies here Wednesday afternoon.
The Pioneers were able to get in singles play against Helix, but doubles play against the Grizzlies and the entire match versus Weston-McEwen were cancelled.
“If it is slick, we don’t want any injuries,” Mac-Hi coach Michelle Snyder said. “The tennis court gets almost like an ice skating rink. So I go out and test it, if I slide without any resistance, we call it after meeting with all the other coaches.
“Everybody, all three coaches, agreed that it was time to pull them off the court,” he said. “It was the best decision for player safety.”
The Pioneer boys defeated Helix in three singles matches to eight points.
The Helix girls’ sole match was a victory for the Grizzlies over Mac-Hi.
Mac-Hi’s Christian Torres was triumphant over Jon Shaw, 8-1, and Miguel Garcia of the Pioneers beat Erik Jones 8-5.
The No. 3 matchup was Mac-Hi’s Rigo Ponce over Allan Holden, 8-1.
In the girls’ match, Helix’s Paige Gabriel beat Jessica Ibarra in a hotly contested affair, 8-5.
“I love watching all of my kids play,” Snyder said. “We are at the part of the season where I get to see what kind of improvements they’ve made. We see how the hard work has paid off.”
The Pioneer boys team plays at Sandy, Ore., at 4 p.m. Friday, and in Sandy’s tournament the following morning at 10 a.m.
The Mac-Hi girls play at the Sherman County tournament against The Dalles Saturday at 10 a.m.
Mac-Hi eyes district playoffs May 16-17 in Tri-Cities, and state play is May 22-24 in Corvallis for all qualifiers.
