Irish girls break through in Yakima

YAKIMA — DeSales girls golfer Emily Baumgart finished second at the seventh annual Wally Johnson Invite at SunTides Golf Course here on Thursday.

Baumgart fired a 78, which trailed two-time defending Class 1A state champion Bree Wanderscheid by seven strokes. Wanderscheid finished with an even-par 71.

“She was excited to go up and play Bree,” DeSales coach Lon Olson said. “(Wanderscheid) has won two in a row, so she’s going for her third in a row.

“Emily improved on the back,” Olson added. “They tied on the back nine. The other girls in her group shot 85, 86. Bree was definitely her competition.”

Behind Baumgart, DeSales’ Alicia Haider fired a 111, Elizabeth Ruthven finished with a 113 and Jane Conley carded a 128.

Olson said between the 80 golfers at the tournament, Haider and Ruthven finished in the upper half.

“That was a breakthrough for Alicia — she was pretty excited about those numbers,” Olson said. “Elizabeth was happy with her score and Jane was a little disappointed because she’s done better. They’ve all had a round they’re pretty satisfied with so far this year.”

The Irish head to Palouse Ridge in Pullman on Tuesday.
