PRESCOTT — The Dayton softball team posted 24 runs over two games, as the Bulldogs swept Waitsburg-Prescott, 13-1 and 11-1, on Saturday.

Dayton’s offense provided a big boost in the twin bill, as Kelli Moore collected seven hits over the two games and Lexus Ward added six. The Bulldogs opened a 7-1 lead after the fifth inning and tacked on five more in the seventh during game one. In the night cap, the Dayton offense kept building until erupting four seven runs combined in the fourth and fifth inning.

“They hit the ball well,” Dayton coach Desirae Jones said. “We’ve had games in the past where we’ve had a few big innings, but they were really consistent today. They put up a couple runs every inning.”

“There were plays we should have made on some of their hits and we didn’t make them,” Waitsburg-Prescott coach Angie Potts said. “We either misread the hit or couldn’t make the play.”

Ward also started game one and threw all seven innings, allowing just three hits while striking out 12. She relieved starter Madison Mings in the night cap, after Mings allowed no hits in her four innings of work.

“Sometimes it’s hard coming back in after not pitching and she did a great job,” Jones said of Ward. “She was very focused today and she was consistent as well.

“Madison was very successful,” Jones added. “She hasn’t had a lot of varsity starts as a pitcher and I thought she did a great job. She was able to stay focused.”

W-P pitcher Jane Brown tossed both games. Although she struggled with her location throughout the day, Potts said her young pitcher is still learning.

“We’re working on that mental toughness and being competitive and bouncing back,” Potts said.
