KENNEWICK — The Walla Walla High School softball team struggled for four innings here Friday during the opening game of their Mid-Columbia Conference doubleheader with Kennewick.
But the Blue Devils scored four times in the fifth inning of a 5-1 victory.
Wa-Hi tallied 13 runs in the second inning of the nightcap and cruised to a 20-0, mercy-rule triumph.
Ellie Rassbach had four hits in game one and Jacie McDaniels belted a home run — a three-run shot in the fifth — as part of a 12-hit Wa-Hi attack.
The Blue Devils tacked on another run in the seventh on a Lauren Likes’ sacrifice fly.
Brandi Schoessler pitched a four-hit complete game for the Blue Devils.
“We were a little slow getting our bats started,” Wa-Hi coach Kate Keyes said. “It was the consistency at the plate from Ellie Rassbach that helped us build some momentum.”
Maddy Aichele stroked five hits from the leadoff spot in game two while Jordy Storm pounded four including a home run, two triples and a double, while knocking in seven runs.
Rassbach pitched a two-hitter and struck out two.
“After game one, the girls flipped a switch and made some adjustments at the plate that allowed us to string hits together and put runs on the board,” Keyes said. “We took care of routine plays on defense, giving Ellie the confidence to throw a great game.”
The Blue Devils host Southridge on Tuesday.
