KENNEWICK — Strong pitching and timely hitting guided the Walla Walla High School baseball team to a Mid-Columbia Conference sweep against Southridge on Tuesday.
The Blue Devils pounced on the Suns for six runs in the first inning of the opener, before winning 11-6.
In the nightcap, starting pitcher Nelson Carpenter, in his first varsity start, went five strong innings in a 4-1 win.
“To get a doubleheader sweep on the road is a credit to our Blue Devil players,” Wa-Hi coach Keith Gradwohl said. “We got contributions from a lot of different kids throughout the two games.”
In the opener, a two-run double by Kal Gray and a two-run single by David Pontarolo helped Wa-Hi open a 6-0 lead after the top of the first. The offense wasn’t done there, however, as the Blue Devils tacked on four more runs over the next three innings.
That was all the run support starter Logan Cordeiro needed, as he tossed five innings, before reliever Zach Zehner closed the door on the Suns.
In the nightcap, it was all about the pitching staff.
Carpenter tossed five innings of three-hit ball, allowing just one run while striking out four. Reliever Ryan Kimball entered the game in the sixth and was lights out from there, as he struck out five.
“Our pitching rotation worked out great as we were able to use Zehner and Kimball in short relief after solid starts by Cordeiro and Carpenter,” Gradwohl said.
