Primary election results roll in around region

Primary election results are coming in for Walla Walla, Columbia and Garfield counties.

Highlights from the races include:

  • Walla Walla County Sheriff John Turner will face Deputy Sgt. Tom Cooper in the general election. Deputy Sgt. Barry Blackman finished third in the preliminary count. Turner gained a plurality but not a majority in the race.
  • Incumbent Walla Walla County Coroner Richard Greenwood will face ex-Coroner Frank Brown, who led Derek Hayden in the three-man race. Greenwood had a majority of the votes in the initial count.
  • Barring a stunning reversal, Jim Duncan will face Dale Johnson in the general election for county commissioner, with ex-Coroner Stephen Ames finishing third in that race.
  • In Columbia County, Merle Jackson and write-in candidate Dwight Richter will contest the open seat on the county commission, with Dain Nysoe eliminated.
  • In Garfield County, the county commission race will see Stan Warren face Justin Dixon, with both men gaining more than double the vote totals of any of the three other candidates.

If anyone thought the sheriffs race wasnt exciting yet, hold on cuz its about to get real interesting. Had blackman received more votes, the race may have been a bit dull

It seems to me.... That majority of the WW Co. is wanting a change in the Sheriff's office. It will be interesting to see if Cooper can entice Blackmans voters to vote for him. It is now very interesting..... It was not a good showing for the incumbent.

That may be why the incumbent didn't want to talk to the newspa;per!

With the number of Blackman and Cooper signs sharing yard space, it seems like the feeling is anyone but Turner so a good number of the Blackman votes should go Cooper's way. And with the 10% drop in votes for Turner compared to 2010, it's obvious many more folks aren't buying what he's selling and have chosen to vote against his bull.

Elections aren't won by yard signs. But if you want to count your chickens before they hatch, go for it. Certainly fits the profile..
