In reply to the Letter to the Editor, “Can Tom Cooper be sheriff with bad knee?” in the Aug. 10 edition.
I have never been quite as disgusted by such slanted and malicious language as written by Robert Phillips, to suggest that Tom Cooper is a good ol’ boy who is knowingly running for a job he cannot handle.
In consideration of the wonderful background this man has performed in the law enforcement profession and his dedication to our community, John Turner and his cohorts show they are the ones with no ethics.
Tom Cooper did a fine job of explaining himself and his reasons for not working light duty.
Mr. Phillips’ letter to the editor is a typical smear tactic, a ploy most of us cannot stand. This is stooping to the fear factor often used by politicians — don’t buy into it.
Added to the bad knee, Phillips alluded to Mr. Cooper’s bar habits, probably trying to make him out a drunkard. Please remember, John Turner was on the Ash Hollow Winery board for a number of years, so it is assumed he also enjoyed a few good drinks.
It is below the dignity of a virtuous civil servant to have a sheriff’s supporter write such an incendiary letter to the editor.
If one should stick to the important issues, Mr. Turner has had to defend himself several times for budget issues of overspending and administration issues, both causing great concern by the county commissioners.
Walla Walla, I am smelling a rotten egg, and it is not Tom Cooper!
