TOUCHET — The Pomeroy Pirate ship hit eight of its first 15 shots and raced to a 22-13 lead after one here Saturday in girls Southeast 1B basketball action. It didn’t get any easier for Touchet as the Pirates sailed away with a 67-42 win.

“It was a good win,” Pomeroy coach Nettie Severs said. “It was a very well rounded game. We played hard for four quarters. We’ve been trying to get that out of them. We played well together.”

Kacey Halbert hit the first Pirate trey of the night to break a 4-4 tie with 4:05 left in the first. The Pirates led the rest of the way. Behind Halbert’s five first quarter points and four each from Emily Jentz and Savannah Ruark, the Pirates off set Touchet’s Cierra Jo McKeown’s 10 points to take the 22-13 lead after one.

With McKeown forced to sit with early foul trouble, Pomeroy expanded the lead to 35-19 at the half.

“We didn’t come ready to play defensively,” Indians coach Malissa McKeown said. “We had a lot of breakdowns. Those put us out of position and we fouled. We don’t have a deep bench, so it really hurts when we get into foul trouble.”

With McKeown going for 12 points in the third and Jennifer Aceves adding a deuce, the Indians stayed with the Pirates. But Tori Koller beat the third period buzzer with a deuce to maintain a 52-33 Pirate lead after three.

Starter Rachel Miller fouled out for the Indian with 7:37 left, and McKeown followed at the 3:21 mark. Pomeroy continued to pound the ball inside to Mackenzie Monahan as Monahan scored 11 of her 16 points in the second half as the Pirates pulled away for the 67-42 win.

“We out sized Touchet at just about every position,” Severs said. “We wanted to take advantage of that.”

McKeown was forced to work for everything she got by the Pirate defense, and still managed to finish with 26 before fouling out. Jennifer Aceves added 12 to the Indian cause.

The Pirates unleashed a balanced scoring attack as Koller led the way with 17 points. Monahan finished with 16 and a game-high 15 rebounds as the taller Pirates won the battle of the glass 54-29. Freshman Halbert added 12 points.

“Offense was not my concern,” Severs added. “Defense was my concern tonight. The McKeown girl is an amazing player and she can beat you all by herself. We did a little box and one and stuck with our game plan. The girls adjusted real well and did a great job playing defense.”

Pomeroy held Lacrosse-Washtucna-Kahlotus to 13 points in Friday action. The Pirates posted a 56-13 win. Pomeroy improves to 10-4 in league and hosts Garfield-Palouse Friday.

“If we win against Gar-Pal, we will end up third or fourth,” Severs said. “We’ll get a home playoff game, which will be exciting. I believe if we play hard and play well, we can beat anybody.”

Touchet gave the No. 1 ranked, undefeated, and defending state champion Colton Wildcats all they wanted in Friday action. The Indians recovered from a 13-2 deficit to start the game and went on a 27-17 second-quarter run to trail 30-29 at the half. The Wildcats are undefeated for a reason and they proved it in the second half to pull away with an 86-40 win. The Indians finish with three on the road starting Tuesday at Rosalia.

“We were sitting fifth,” coach McKeown said of the Indians standing. “The top six are in the playoffs. This is a tough league.”
