TOUCHET — No. 2 1B ranked Pomeroy came out of the locker room and roared to an 18-3 lead after one in Southeast 1B boys basketball action here Saturday. Touchet never gave in and clawed back to within four before the Pirates closed out a 46-37 win.

“It was good to see us come out pretty strong in the first quarter,” Pirates coach Brian Koller said. “We needed to do that down here. We got a little flat and lazy in the second quarter. We knew they would make a run. Totally what I expected that it would come down to the last few minutes.”

Riley Bott and Cole Mayfield keyed the first-quarter Pirate run as both scored seven points. The Indians didn’t go away and behind five points each from Zach Carson and Carlos Rincon, the Indians cut the Pirate lead to 26-15 at intermission.

“We were real stagnant the first quarter,” Indians coach Tim McKeown said. “Right off the bat we had turnover after turnover. It got frustrating. (You can’t do that) against a top ranked team in the state.”

Ruben Butler scored six of Touchet’s nine third period point as the Indians cut the Pirate lead to 32-24 following a Butler conversion of a Elias Martinez feed with 2:55 left in the period. Pomeroy’s Tyson Feider beat the third period buzzer with a 3-ball and the Pirates took a 35-24 lead to the fourth.

Butler converted a three-point play to open the fourth as the Indians crept within 35-27 with 7:39 left. Feider answered with a 3, but the Indians got consecutive treys from Edgar Rincon and Conner McKeown to creep closer at 38-34 with 3:22 left.

Cody LaMunyan and Bott converted three-of-four free throws and the lead jumped to 41-34 with 4:01 left. McKeown buried another three to run the score to 41-37 with 3:22 to play. The Indians would get no closer.

Buckets by Bott and LaMunyan sealed the deal as Touchet coughed up the ball twice over the last two minutes.

“We got within four,” coach McKeown said. “Then we come back down and it’s turnover again. We’ve just got to learn to take care of the ball, especially with a team like this. We made some bad choices at wrong times.”

“We hit some big shots when we needed to,” Koller said. “He (LaMunyan) got frustrated throughout the game (four fouls). He stepped up at the end and got it done.”

Bott led the Pirates with 14, LaMunyan scored 12, and Feider finished with 11.

“We did a number on their big guys (6-foot-7 Bott and 6-6 Lamunyan), they didn’t get their normal 20,” coach McKeown said. “We had some shots we needed to make and didn’t make them.”

Colter McKeown and Ruben Butler led the Indians with 11 points each. Zach Carson chipped in six points and led the smaller Indians to a 33-29 rebounding edge with seven boards.

In Friday action, after a slow start, Pomeroy took charge with a 16-6 third-quarter run and handled Lacrosse-Washtucna-Kahlotus 56-37. The Pirates improve to 13-1 and will attempt to avenge their one loss when Garfield-Palouse visits Friday.

Touchet had no answer for Colton’s Jake Straughan’s 25 points Friday as Colton held off the Indians 52-47. The Indians, despite a three game skid, are fourth, but must finish the season with three road games starting with a trip to Rosalia Tuesday.

“We’re going to have to do our work for our next three games,” coach McKeown said. “It (the schedule) is brutal.”
